My Story

Recovery Narrative

Photo Journey

After reading Stephen King's On Impact, I decided to explore the genre of recovery narrative to tell my own story. My narrative medicine, a literary journey through my life's biggest challenge, Near Stillness portrays the raw experience, the words I can't always express vocally and the story that has shaped me into who I am today. Written in 12 chapters, each depicts a different portion of my journey and is headed by either a text message or Facebook message I received from family, friends, acquaintances, or strangers in response to my accident.

Aside from writing, dance has been a huge passion and influence in my life for as long as I can remember. Having the ability to dance taken away from me has been an adversity in itself in many ways, but also the reason I knew I had to incorporate it into my project. Body, Limited is the choreography I have produced but have asked someone else to perform for me. The poem following, titled the same, was created to be read indirectionally, with the purpose of capturing the jumbled emotion of this experience.

The photo journey is a snapshot series of chronological events in the timeline of my story. Each photo represents something meaningful to me, and something I hope will be helpful in bringing my words, my journey, my story through Near Stillness and Body, Limited to life.
